Mobile Madness – Ariana Gets Crafty?
June 18th, 2008 by ariana
But first an update on Knut vs. Oliver 2008.. Thank you SO much everyone for voting. Opinions seem to be pretty much evenly divided, so I’ll have to do what I always do when I can’t make up my mind… buy both!
Now onto the mobiles..
One of the last things I want to tackle before calling the nursery done is make a mobile. I did a google search on diy mobiles and didn’t come up with much, until I hit the motherload of mobile inspriration and general tour de force of craftiness in this mobile swap Flickr photo pool.
Here are two made of cardboard/cardstock that I love:
This one is made of fabric and also has a tutorial via ohdeedoh:
But this one, made of felt and blogged about here
along with this sheep and trees mobile blogged about here
are my current obsessions/inspiration. I want to buy up the world’s supply of felt and make cute monkey “softies” or “stuffies” or “felties” as all the cool crafters call them.
Here are the pieces I’ve made so far:
Monkey in Progress
Finished Monkey Feltie
Bird in Progress
Finished Felt Birdie
If the idea of making felties strikes anyone else’s fancy, I followed futuregirl’s amazing tutorials to learn the two different stiches (blanket stitch and whip stitch.)
I’m not sure what other shapes I want for the mobile.. I’m thinking a tree and a leaf shape taken from the crib bedding:
And maybe a cloud thrown in for good measure.
When I’m finished with the mobile, I’m thinking I may try to make this Softie Scottie Dog because I feel a felt addiction coming on:
How cute is he? Pattern and tutorial at allsorts.
I just found that one (last week) with the fabric birds on the twigs mobile. I cut out the pieces last night! As soon as I saw the beginning of your post, I thought “I have to send her that photo!” But you found it on your own.
Quincy, wow, that’s such a coincidence! The www can be really small sometimes no? :)
Sooooo cute!!!
I have felt and I’m home today…oy…no good can come of this…
I’m in love with these, they are so cute! I’ve never made anything like this before but I may have to give it a try. Thanks for the links!
I bow down to your craftiness Ariana! The monkey and bird are just DARLING, and I’m sure the tree and leaf will make the whole thing come together like a dream.
so creative, i love it!
I’ve been wanting to make these since I saw them in a martha holiday issue. The concept behind the project is to use the old wool sweaters that you (or your spouse) “accidentally” threw in the washer/dryer and would now fit a 5 year old.
Those are so cute! Make a little apple too!
Like you, the first two are my favourite. What a neat project.

Those are adorable! I love the scottie dog too!
I think mobiles are such a great feature to any nursery, and I think can cross over to adult rooms too. Since I’ve been thinking about having kids lately, this is a great inspiration.
The felt monkey is adorable!
Aw, that monkey is too cute!
Hey!!! Oh I just adore these mobiles!
Also, I don’t know if you ever decided on an area rug or not (I’ve been a little behind on my reading) but I’ve posted a closeup of the zebra rug from Urban Outfitters if you’re still interested.
Take care sweetie!

OOoooh, thank you for the link! I appreciate it!
[…] To make the mobile itself, I used a piece of embroidery thread that matched the animal and simply tied it around one of two dowels that I crossed and bound together. Doesn’t get much easier than that! […]
